Once the natural nail has been prepped, tips are glued to the top edge, a.k.a. Nail tips are preshaped plastic extenders that can function as bones, so to speak, for a svelte mani look. What are hard gel extensions?Īccording to Ornellas, hard gel extensions are created in one of two ways: with nail tips or nail forms. Gel polish, on the other hand, is more porous, which explains why bright whites and light pinks tend to look grubby with wear. The tightly woven polymer structure comprising hard gel also makes it impervious to staining. The polymers that make up hard gel are tighter than those in gel polish, which explains the relative strength of each product. “The greater the number of links between chains in the three-dimensional networks, the more solid the resulting polymer will be.” “How and where they link is determined by the types of molecules that are mixed together,” Dobos says. Within these 3D networks, the molecular chains link in specific formations. According to Dobos, the light spurs “a chemical reaction called polymerization.” During the polymerization process, “small molecules, monomers, or oligomers join together to form long chains or three-dimensional networks.” Nail lamps emit UV or LED light, which transforms gooey liquids into shiny solids. Once applied, both hard gel and gel polish require time under a nail lamp. “It’s accomplishments were, and still are, to keep colour on longer than nail polish,” Suzie says. Not to be confused with hard gel, gel polish has been popular since the ’90s, when it was introduced as a chip-free, color-depositing alternative to traditional nail polish. What most people colloquially refer to as a “gel manicure” involves gel polish, also known as soft gel or soak-off gel. While this can make application easier, hybrid gel cannot self-level as a result, whereas hard gel can. One advantage hybrid gel holds over hard gel is its relative ease of use whereas hard gel can be runny, hybrid gel remains in place until it’s intentionally moved. The formula, typically housed in a squeeze tube, is thick but is more pastelike than resiny, and is strong enough to create nail extensions too. ![]() Also dubbed polygel or gum gel, hybrid gel looks, and even acts, a bit like hard gel. ![]() Now to add a sprinkle of confusion back into the mix: Hard gel differs from hybrid gel. To save you confusion: hard gel, builder gel, and sculpting gel are one and the same-synonyms! For context: Consider the many monikers of traditional nail polish-lacquer, varnish, and enamel, to name a few. Terms like builder gel, structure gel, and sculpting gel cropped up in my searches, leaving me with more questions than products in my virtual shopping cart. As always, take any tip you learn from TikTok with a grain of salt, but enjoy experimenting and having fun. It is always best to go to a pro when working with gel, but if that is not an option for you, this method allows you a good amount of control in how closely the gel gets your skin. The overlay method can be helpful if you struggle with getting your nail tips to look natural. In short, if you don't do this technique correctly, you can still face a risk of developing a gel allergy. "Licensed technicians know product control and how to avoid overcontact with the skin," she says. Though the technique does, in fact, allow better adherence of the tips to your natural nails, Kandalec still recommends going to a professional nail artist when working with gel polishes to avoid allergies. ![]() This technique highlights once more that we need all-inclusive sizing on nail tips, too many brands were not making tips large enough for people's thumbs, as well as transgender people who wanted to wear nails but found that the prepackaged ones were too small." So moving the tip out further on the nail and then filling the space with gel - similar to doing a fill or retouch - allowed them to fit better. "It originated from people finding that some nail tips weren't large enough to fit their fingers. ![]() "This solution has been around," Kandalec says. Though TikTok is reintroducing the technique to the masses, it's one that's been used for years. "This method is a way to ensure better adhesion for your gel tips, or a way to make larger nails fit when the tips are too small for your own nails," celebrity manicurist Julie Kandalec tells POPSUGAR. Then you fill in that gap with the extend gel to adhere the tip to your finger. The technique itself entails placing a prepared Gel-X nail tip right above your cuticle line, leaving some space between the end of your cuticles and the nail. ![]() Please speak with your doctor about your specific treatment plan and potential for success. Of course, it depends on the materials you use to construct your privacy screen, and how big you want it to be. In most cases, a privacy screen will be less expensive than a fence. The cost for labor could drive up the price. A fence might also have to be installed by a professional if you don't want to build one yourself. As fences tend to be bigger, sturdier, and longer-lasting, they're more expensive than privacy screens. How much do you want to spend?Ĭost could be a determining factor in your choice between a fence and privacy screen. If you only want to create a small private space like a patio, garden, or deck, then a privacy screen would be better. If you're looking to keep your entire backyard private, then consider constructing a fence. Privacy screens only section off one part of your garden or patio, and may not cover your entire yard. Gutmann informed us of a research opportunity that would pay for the entire IVF cycle except medication. 1 ultrasound monitoring appt showed 5 eggs. We weren't ready to fully dive into IVF yet so our first step was a Clomid + timed intercourse cycle. Gutmann said test results had rebounded so well that she thought one of the tests was inaccurate, and the answer was most likely somewhere in between.Ģ. My husband also decided to cut from ~3-6 beers a week to 1. First semen analysis showed slightly low sperm count and motility. I appreciated that she called me late at night after the first loss to check on me (nurse had delivered the news earlier in the day).ġ. Many people say she's not "warm" and she's not exactly, but she's very empathetic. I did return to her two do an egg retrieval and two embryo transfers after the two failed IUIs at the other clinic. I ended up going to another clinic to do my first two IUIs only because they were a bit cheaper than RMA and logistically simpler (they scheduled all of their procedures in the city where I live, whereas RMA does procedures out in the suburbs, about 30 minutes from where I live in the city with no car). She didn't know how I was feeling, but I'd emailed asking her for more info and she called me late on a Friday night and spent 30 mins on the phone with me explaining what it all meant and helping me decide how to proceed. I was devastated, thinking that I wouldn't even be able to conceive. I did some diagnostic testing with her after that first visit, which led to a diagnosis of very low AMH. I felt like she respected that decision and took great care to review all of my options and answer my constant flow of questions. I knew that I had no insurance coverage for this so would be paying for all of this out of pocket. I went to see her alone, hoping to conceive as a single woman, using donor sperm. Our next IUI baseline is scheduled for this week and will likely follow the same protocol.ĭr Gutmann was actually the first doctor I had consulted with before starting on my fertility journey. The second IUI resulted in a positive HCG test, but the level was 34 and quickly dropped to 6. This time, she started me at 75IU, but shortly bumped me back up to 150iu, as my estogren dropped after the first three injections. Our second IUI followed the same protocol, with 16 days of stims before trigger. I received my period prior to the pregnancy test. I triggered with Ovidrel after day 14 of Menopur and my IUI was performed 32 hours later. I had bloods and ultrasound every 3 days throughout the entire process. I was then bumped up to 150 iu after my estrogen was still <100. I began 75iu of Menopur for three days, then after my blood and ultrasound, continued for three more days. Each IUI showed at least 3 mature follicles.Īfter our initial consult, she scheduled me for an MRI of the pituitary, which showed a small tumor, meaning that I would very likely not respond to oral medications and advised we go straight to injectables. The first IUI resulted in a chemical pregnancy. We have done 4 IUI's with follistim and follistim/clomid. We haven't done another IVF cycle since then. However, retrieval yielded only 7 follicles, and none fertilized. We stimmed another twelve nights and all monitoring appointments showed more follicles than the first round. We then did the same agonist protocol with the same dosages. ![]() This time instead of BC, we primed with estrogen ( we thought the BC may have suppressed me too much). We took a month off, and then started another round of stims. 8 follicles were retrieved, 6 were mature, 4 fertilized and made it to day 5, however only 1 was able to transferred. The word "cancel" was tossed around once or twice, however we went through with the retrieval. About a week into stims, we realized I wasn't responding to the meds as we would expect for someone my age. We did 300 follistim iu and 75iu menopur for twelve nights. We then followed the agonist protocol with an aggressive med list. The first cycle we used BC for a week prior to starting stims.
